Josef Jelínek

Josef Jelínek studied stage design with L. Vychodil, first of all at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, and later at the University of Performing Arts in Bratislava. He began his career in Zlín, and in 1983 found a position in the National Theatre, where he worked for twenty years as a permanent artist, also guesting in theatres in the Czech Republic and abroad (Great Britain, Germany, Norway, Spain, Poland, Monte Carlo etc.). He has designed costumes and stage sets for drama, opera and ballet productions, totalling 600 costume designs. He is an internationally acclaimed artist, the winner of several awards: Young Artist prize (1977), MK SR prize (1978), the gold medal at the Triennale in Novi Sad (1981) and at the Prague Quadriennale (1983).
